“Sometimes the road you take doesn’t lead you where you planned… it leads you to yourself.”
At Miafrica, we believe that travel is more than movement, it’s a journey into culture, healing, and self-discovery. Africa, with its rich tapestry of traditions, landscapes, and humanity, offers something unique to every traveler who dares to explore it with an open heart.
Today, we bring you a deeply personal story, not from a luxury influencer or travel agent, but from a solo traveler named Kaan. He didn’t come to Africa for a checklist or Instagram shots. He came seeking something real.
Kaan’s journey began in Ghana and unfolded into an 8-month transformational odyssey through West, East, and Southern Africa. Along the way, he encountered kindness, culture, and clarity, and what he discovered changed his life forever.
In this special interview, Raphael, co-founder of Miafrica, sits down with Kaan to talk about fear, freedom, and the unexpected magic of solo travel across Africa.
The Interview: Raphael Meets Kaan
Raphael (Miafrica):
Welcome to the Miafrica Travel Blog! Today, I’m thrilled to have a very special guest, Kaan, a solo traveler who has journeyed through multiple countries in Africa and has an inspiring story to share. Kaan, thank you for joining us!
Kaan:
Thank you, Raphael! It’s an honor. Africa gave me so much, this feels like the perfect space to reflect and share.
Raphael:
Let’s jump right in. Where did your African journey begin?
Kaan:
It all started in Ghana. I landed in Accra with just a backpack and a curious heart. What I thought would be a 2-week trip turned into 8 months across West, East, and Southern Africa. Ghana was the spark. The warmth of the people, the music, the food — I immediately felt like I belonged.
Raphael:
That’s amazing. What inspired you to travel solo, especially through Africa?
Kaan:
Honestly, I was at a crossroads in life. I needed something real — not a vacation, but an awakening. I’d heard so many stories about Africa being rich in culture and deeply spiritual. Traveling solo was a conscious choice. I wanted to experience everything raw, without filters.
Raphael:
Was it scary at first?
Kaan:
Absolutely. I had my doubts. Media back home painted Africa with one brush — mostly negative. But the moment I started meeting people, hearing their stories, sharing meals, and being invited into homes… the fear disappeared. The world opened up.
Raphael:
What’s one moment you’ll never forget?
Kaan:
In Kenya, I volunteered at a school in a rural village. One afternoon, a little boy handed me a note that simply read, “Thank you for seeing me.” I cried. That moment grounded me — reminded me why we travel: to connect, to listen, to grow.
Raphael:
Beautiful. How has Africa changed you personally?
Kaan:
In every way. I used to rush through life. Africa slowed me down. It taught me patience, presence, and perspective. I learned to value community over competition, silence over noise, and nature over screens. I returned home a different person.
Raphael:
What would you say to someone considering solo travel in Africa but feeling unsure?
Kaan:
Do it, but do it with an open heart. Let go of the headlines and embrace the real stories. Africa isn’t just a destination; it’s a mirror. It will challenge you, heal you, and leave fingerprints on your soul.
Raphael:
Wow. That gave me chills. Final question, where to next?
Kaan:
I’m planning to return to Namibia and maybe head north toward Ethiopia. But honestly, every time I leave Africa, I start planning my return. It’s home now, in a way I never expected.
Raphael:
Kaan, thank you for sharing your journey with us. Your story is what Miafrica is all about, meaningful travel, human connection, and Africa’s untold beauty. We can’t wait to follow your next adventure!
