American Airlines wasn’t the first to launch a loyalty program (that honor goes to the defunct Texas International Airlines). But it remains the world’s largest and longest continuously operating loyalty program. Marriott followed closely after, launching its loyalty program in 1983. Loyalty would eventually become a billion-dollar business for hotels and airlines, which benefited from the rise of premium rewards credit cards.
